Gun Crazy…

13 Dec

So, another school shooting.

This is sadly getting far too routine.

I truly don’t understand the American mind. How many tragedies does it take for us to regulate guns in a sensible way?
When I was about 10, in the 1950’s, a little boy in our church was shot to death in a childhood “accident.” He was six and starting school the next week. The other two boys were 5 and 3. The big ones were playing with the father’s handgun, and wouldn’t let the baby have it. When they put it down he picked up his dad’s weapon and shot the visitor to death.
The parents of the dead boy had no way of knowing he was visiting a home where a lethal weapon was left lying around. Needless to say, there was no legal action taken after this tragedy. But I will tell you for a fact, in my life in that community, I would never have anything to do with that kid. I couldn’t look at him or talk to him, and I still remember his name.
We have come a long was as a society since the days when weapons were needed to protect your home on the frontier from marauding animals, criminals, hostiles, and to hunt food to eat. If you own a gun you should be required to demonstrate competency, a knowledge of law, carry hefty liability insurance, have a gun lock, and show authorities your safe locking storage facility.
One of my daughter’s girlfriends is going to a shooting range now, and it just makes my skin crawl. Shooting is not a game or a recreational activity.

Merry Christmas, Stephen. Maybe we’ll have a chance to get together this year.
