Crimes in America…
A 13-year-old girl is killed on her birthday, and it’s apparently not a crime.
A teenage girl was accidentally shot and killed Tuesday night in Johnson County while her teenage brother cleaned a gun.
Emilee Bates, who celebrated her 13th birthday Tuesday, was airlifted to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where she died, authorities said.
Deputies responded at about 8 p.m. to the home off FM917 near Joshua. Emilee’s 19-year-old brother was cleaning his guns when one went off, striking her in the stomach, authorities said.
The incident is being treated as an accident, and no charges are expected to be filed, said Lt. Tim Jones, a spokesman for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.
But this I suppose is a crime.
A Florida state senator says he wants changes made to laws in the wake of the felony charges against Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old high school senior who was arrested for her relationship with a 15-year-old girl.
Under Florida’s consent laws, it is illegal for an 18-year-old to engage in sexual relations with anyone under the age of 16. According to TCPalm, other Indian River County lawmakers said that the laws protect children as they stand.
Hunt faces two felony charges and could serve 15 years in prison if convicted. She is scheduled to appear in court June 20 after refusing a plea deal last Friday. The deal offered by the state of Florida would have placed Hunt under house arrest and required her to register as a sex offender.
How things change, I guess, as I recall when such laws were used to selectively ensure your white daughter didn’t date a black classmate.

Now time for “False Equivalency Theatre”…
I saw this plastered on a sign post in Capitol Hill. I guess it makes sense. I sometimes leave my loaded lesbian lying around where a small child can reach her and fire her at himself or another child. I also stockpile lesbians in the event I need to defend myself against a tyrannical government. And this country’s laughably easy access to lesbians results in a disturbing number of deaths each year.
Also, is that a bullet bracelet? What is the fashion goal here?
Good Guys with Guns…
The senseless death of Hostra student Andrea Rebello further underscores the calculated stupidity the NRA promotes with its insistence that the best answer to gun violence is “good guys with guns.”
Hofstra University student Andrea Rebello was killed by a police officer’s bullet after a masked intruder held a loaded gun to her head in a Long Island home and then took aim at the officer, Nassau County police said.
Rebello and the intruder were both killed after a split-second decision by the Nassau County police officer, authorities said. Police said Rebello was being held in a headlock by a masked intruder when the officer fired eight times, one shot hitting Rebello in the head.
Things can go horribly wrong even when a highly trained officer is involved. No civilian is as qualified to handle this type of situation, as that rather arrogantly implies that someone can accomplish in their spare time what a police officer dedicates his life to doing professionally.
The NRA would tell me that civilians have no choice but to arm themselves in response to armed criminals. However, the best response would be doing everything possible to limit the ridiculously easy access criminals have to guns in this country.

The police statements after events like the Castillo killing/inevitable officer acquittal are rarely made to reassure POC but to calm moderate whites. There are no promises of better outcomes, that another POC won’t be pulled over for having a black nose or shot in front of their child because of what an officer has a “split second” to decide. Basically the argument is “sucks to be us.”
And I’ve had it with the solipsistic narcissism of how shooting a man to death in front of his child and the child’s mother is really a bummer for the cop. Even if he’s in therapy dealing with it, it’s hardly as relevant as what the dead man and his loved ones are experiencing. I also am highly suspicious of how much this truly has affected the officer. I mean Bill Cosby is probably stressed out but that’s all about him, his reputation, career and liberty, not the women he raped.
If the cop offered to help raise the now fatherless child like Joe West on The Flash, that’s one thing but that’s not even a consideration.
We continue to debate whether racism or “white privilege” even exists when predominately white juries not only consistently let officers walk for these killings but never express the consistent level of outrage or demands for change that we see as a the result of airline overbookings. I can almost understand the cognitive dissonance and classism behind safely assuming you’ll never be busted for selling loose cigarettes or CDs, but if white Americans really believed they had as much chance of being blown away — again in front of their child — during a routine traffic stop or their child could be killed for playing with a toy gun in a public park, they wouldn’t stand for it.
